Student Vote

Student Vote BC is a non-partisan, parallel election program for students under the voting age. The purpose is to provide students with an opportunity to experience their democracy first-hand and build a habit of voting that will last a lifetime.

Registered schools received a free election package including: activity resources, posters, electoral district maps, voting screens, ballot boxes and ballots. Participating schools used the Student Vote materials to stimulate peer-to-peer dialogue, school-wide activities and family engagement throughout the election period.

On Monday, May 11, 2009 - the day before General Voting Day - schools hosted a Student Vote Day. Just like their parents, students received two ballots: one to elect a Member of the Legislative Assembly, and one for the referendum on electoral reform.

The Student Vote results were announced on CBC after the close of voting on May 12th, and published in newspapers the following day.

Student Vote received the support of Elections BC, the Ministry of Eduwww.studentvote.cacation and education stakeholders province-wide.

In the 2005 provincial election campaign, more than 66,000 students participated across British Columbia.
