Sticking to the voters list: Elections BC reminds computer users they need to register

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VICTORIA – From Elections BC, a new idea to get the attention of thousands of people who spend most of their day peering into a computer screen.

It’s a monitor sticker, a small poster stuck to the top of a computer monitor carrying a brief message.  In this case it’s “Get on the List,” a reminder to register for the May 12 election.

Elections BC is printing 10,000 of the bright yellow tags to distribute to public libraries, which host 2,900 public-access computers, and to colleges, universities and some government offices.

“It’s an idea we came up with to remind people they need to be on the voters list,” says Harry Neufeld, BC’s Chief Electoral Officer.  ”Since they’re already at a computer, we’re hoping they’ll click over to the Elections BC website and use our online registration system, which is the easiest way to make sure you’re on the list.”

The 17.5 x 6 cm monitor stickers are one part of an effort by Elections BC to reach 3.2 million people across the province to ensure they’re registered to vote. The sticker expands the viewing area or “real estate” of a computer monitor to several inches on top of the screen.

The major effort of the enumeration project is a mailout of 2 million enumeration notices to households throughout B.C. which began early this month.  People must be registered in order to vote in the May 12 election and referendum on electoral reform.
