Chief Electoral Officer Appointment Ends June 5, 2010

VICTORIA - Chief Electoral Officer Harry Neufeld will be leaving his position as Chief Electoral Officer for the province of British Columbia on June 5, 2010, when his term expires. 

Mr. Neufeld has held his position since November 7, 2002 and has been dedicated to serving democracy in British Columbia through the fair and impartial administration of the provincial electoral process.  He oversaw the administration of two general elections, three by-elections, two referenda on electoral reform, one electoral boundary redistribution and nine recall petitions. 

“It has been an honour to serve as Chief Electoral Officer,” said Neufeld.  “Elections BC is a leader in electoral administration due to the efforts of a dedicated and talented team that is committed to the delivery of electoral democracy in B.C.” 

On May 6, 2010, the Legislative Assembly established a Special Committee to Appoint a Chief Electoral Officer.  Mr. Craig James, Clerk of Committees, has been appointed Acting Chief Electoral Officer until a new Chief Electoral Officer is appointed.  The term of office for the Chief Electoral Officer is two elections plus one year.
