Huntington Elected, Judicial Recount in Delta South
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 26, 2009
VICTORIA – A judicial recount will be held in Delta South following the final count of all ballots in that district, giving a 32-vote lead to Independent candidate Vicki Huntington.
Huntington leads Liberal candidate Wally Oppal 9,977 votes to 9,945 votes after a recount of the election night tally and final count of 918 absentee ballots. Oppal led by 3 votes on election night, May 12.
The final count is automatically subject to a judicial recount as the difference in votes between the top two candidates is less than 1/500 or .2% of the total ballots considered.
The District Electoral Officer in Delta South will apply to the Supreme Court of B.C. for a judicial recount. The date when the judicial recount is scheduled to start is likely to be announced by the end of this week.
In Cariboo-Chilcotin, there was another election-night reversal as Liberal candidate Donna Barnett led NDP candidate Charlie Wyse 6,259 votes to 6,171 votes following a recount and final count of absentee ballots in that district. Wyse led by 23 votes on election night.
Final count of absentee ballots in all 85 electoral districts for the general election and referendum on electoral reform will be completed Wednesday.
