Ballots-to-Go For Thousands of B.C. Voters

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 4, 2009

VICTORIA - Thousands of voters who can’t show up in person for advance voting this week or on General Voting Day May 12 will have ballots delivered to them by Elections BC’s mobile voting operations.

There will be 738 mobile voting locations across the province in long-term care facilities, hospitals, provincial jails and work camps for the election and referendum on electoral reform.

“It’s part of our effort to ensure British Columbians everywhere get a chance to vote,” said Harry Neufeld, Chief Electoral Officer.  “We try hard not to miss anyone, whether they’re in a seniors’ home in Vancouver or a hospital in northern B.C.”

Most of the mobile teams will begin travelling to their locations on Wednesday, the same day four days of advance voting begin.  They will wrap up their work on May 12 when they visit hospitals to deliver ballots from room to room for patients confined to their beds.

In the 2005 election, about 20,000 people voted at mobile locations across the province.
